home securityHave you ever tried to think like a burglar? It’s often the best way to beef up your home security. And since a home burglary occurs about every 15 seconds in America, you can never be too safe at home. These five tips help you think of security from the perspective of thieves so you can stop them in their tracks.
  1. Don’t advertise your trash: Curbside trash pickup is convenient, but it allows everyone to see that new 60-inch TV or laptop you just bought. Petty criminals may be attracted to your home if you advertise all of the expensive items that they can easily steal. After a high-dollar purchase, it’s best to drop your trash directly at a trash or recycling center.
  2. Put ladders away: If a ladder is left outside somewhere on your property, thieves can use it to enter a second-story window. While you may be prudent when it comes to locking doors and first-floor windows, you must also remember to lock second-story windows before leaving and at night. Better yet, keep ladders in a garage, shed or other hiding place.
  3. Keep a tidy yard: Overgrown bushes or trees provide the perfect hiding spot for burglars, who especially love it if these areas are near windows. Keeping a tidy, trimmed yard minimizes these hiding spots, making your home a less attractive target. Bonus points for installing motion sensor lights.
  4. Never go unarmed: If your security alarm is externally visible, any thief can see if you’ve left it unarmed while running a quick errand. It’s best if you always set the alarm when leaving, even if only for a few minutes. Better yet, hang blinds or curtains in front of the window that provides the peep show.
  5. Prep for a vacation: When away, burglars may think your home is an easy target—unless it appears to be lived in. Before leaving, call the post office and ask them to hold your mail for the time that you’ll be away. You can pick it up when you return. Do the same if you subscribe to a newspaper. To enhance the façade, install a few light timers around your home and set them to turn on and off at various times throughout the day.
